How it Works: Anaerobic Digestion (AD) + Filtration + Ion-exchange
Anaerobic digestion (AD) uses microbial action to digest sewage. AD is one of the central technologies used in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WwTP’s), and it is not typically very well understood by practitioners, public officials, or the public. EKO GEA, using its expertise as a commercial biology company involved in both biological WwT and biogas production, has developed a number of innovations which speed and protect the performance of AD microorganisms. This overall stabilising effect means rapid, problem-free, efficient decomposition of sewage.
Enhanced Filtration EKO GEA’s bio-media is packed into the bio-filter and offers the following attributes:
Physical filtration capacity which exceeds that of activated charcoal or other filtration media
Exponential surface area increases for anaerobic bacteria culture growth
Ion-exchange capacity for reduction of phosphorous, nitrate, and heavy metals
EKO GEA’s bio-media is volcanic, natural stone which is chemically & biologically inert. It is 97% silica and is especially porous, lightweight, and robust. Due to its vulcanisation, it does not compress and acts to prevent clogging. Most importantly, it “shelters” micro-organisms in its vast surface area and allows for exponential increases in numbers of microbial “workers”.
Biological Ion-exchange EKO GEA’s system provides an ion-exchange mechanism. The system is negatively charged and "offers" negative ions to cation (positively-charged) elements in the water (phosphates, nitrates, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide…). This ion-exchange capacity also results in our product’s ability to block metals and eliminate odours. EKO GEA is at the forefront of waste treatment technology via the biological ion-exchange capacities of our products.
